Program Overview

Aims

The Graduate Program in Applied Economy of the Universidade Federal de Viçosa aims at training human resources capable of exercising activities relating to the applicability of concepts and economic analysis techniques to assist in the decision-making process and in the formulation of measures of sector, trade and environmental policies. To achieve these aims, the Master’s and Doctorate in Applied Economy provides a solid training in Economic Theory (Microeconomics and Macroeconomics), Quantitative Methods, Evaluation of Projects and Government Programs, Industrial Organization, International Trade, Economic Development, Studies of Markets and Predictability of Prices (available and future markets) and Economics of Natural and Environmental Resources.

History

The Universidade Federal de Viçosa (UFV) has been offering the Graduate Program in Agricultural Economics at Master level since 1961, and Doctorate level since 1972. The course was accredited by the Federal Council of Education (CFE), by the Report nº 39/80 – Processes nº. 220/78 e 222/78, approved by the Ministry of Education and Culture on January 31st, 1980 and published in the Official Gazette on March 12th, 1980. In 2002, the program was renamed “Applied Economy”, as approved at the meeting of December 5th of the Board of Education and Research (CEPE) of UFV. In the latest assessment of CAPES (2010-2012 period), the program received grade 5 (five).
